Student-led panel advocates for increased sexual assault awareness

A panel led by Washburn University students advocating for increased awareness and prevention of assault will present their insights at a forum at 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Mabee Library.

The panel, titled “The Importance of Sharing Your Story,” will feature students from the psychology department who will present their research and share their experiences as Bodstanders, members of Washburn University’s active bystander program.

The program is guided by a grant from the Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women. The grant was awarded in 2015.

Shelly Bearman, the Washburn University sexual assault education and prevention coordinator said that the event is an important opportunity for students to share their stories and experiences.

“This work doesn’t occur in a vacuum, but is peer-led,” she said.

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Jericho Hockett, assistant professor of psychology.
